LOW BARRIER NAVIGATION CENTERS
Springboard’s Low Barrier Navigation Center (LBNC) program, developed from operational experience in Georgetown and examples in other states, is a pioneering initiative designed to combat homelessness by creating accessible and supportive housing facilities. These centers are distinct because they minimize the common barriers that prevent people from accessing shelter, such as restrictive entry requirements and a lack of support services. Each LBNC provides more than just temporary housing; it offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to address the multifaceted needs of its residents.
The key to the effectiveness of the LBNCs lies in their operational framework, which includes support services provided by Navigators that are essential for the residents' transition to stable, independent living. These services encompass case management, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, and support in obtaining necessary documentation and employment and a nutritional meals program. This holistic approach ensures that individuals are not only housed but are also supported in overcoming personal challenges that may contribute to their homelessness.
Moreover, the LBNCs are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, allowing pets, possessions, and partners, which are often barriers in traditional homeless shelters. The centers aim to create a dignified living environment that respects the privacy and individuality of each resident. This is achieved through the provision of single-room occupancy units, which offer greater privacy than communal sleeping arrangements.
Central to the LBNC program’s success is the role of Navigators—experienced professionals who work directly with residents to create tailored service plans. These plans reflect the individual’s unique needs and goals, ensuring they can access the full array of services available both on-site and through a network in Georgetown of over 24 community partnerships. Navigators help residents stay on track, connecting them to essential resources and supporting them throughout their journey to regain independence.
In addition to providing immediate relief through housing, LBNCs emphasize long-term solutions, focusing on personal empowerment and community reintegration. By offering an inclusive, supportive environment combined with robust service delivery, LBNCs effectively address the complex issues surrounding homelessness.
